Recently I’ve been getting more work done on Windows 10 rather than macOS. Long story. In the process I’ve been looking for a substitute for iCloud Photo Library and have landed on Google Photos. Putting aside concerns about giving Google more data, it’s really, really good.

Going back to a two monitor setup on my Mac makes me feel like I’ve been walking around with a patch over one eye all this time. I have depth of field and peripheral vision again, the world is richer, brighter and fuller.

Rob Pike makes a case for ‘dumbing down’ our smartphones for the sake of combating our increasing screen addiction, likening smartphones to ‘pocket casino’s’ in how they reinforce attention behaviours. An extreme position, but a relevant issue for today’s parents to consider.

I’ve found a flaw with my smartwatch and I’m afraid it’s unfixable: Babies love them. They’re colourful, accessible and ‘do stuff’ when babies touch them. Basically, baby catnip. My son is constantly changing the music volume, skipping tracks and starting workouts. /sigh

Using our smartphones mindfully is something I’ve been thinking about lately. Niklas Göke outlines some useful steps to help tame your phone and make it work for you. This includes some gems I wasn’t even aware of, such as removing notifications on the lock screen.
